Umno delegates attending the 2012 Umno General Assembly have been entrusted to interpret and ensure that Umno President Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's message on the importance of party's preparedness to face the 13th general election (GE13) reaches the grassroots.
Dungun Umno chief Datuk Dr Rosli Mat Hassan said the president's message must be viewed seriously by party members and should be widely spread at the grassroots level.
The message also emphasized the importance for Umno members to restore the party's dignity and to fight against the opposition in issues concerning religion, race and country, he told Bernama when met on the final day of the assembly, which has also deemed the last before the GE13.
He said Umno members should fight until the end to prevent the country from falling into the opposition's hands.
For that, he said the party's election machinery at the division and branch levels should close ranks, intensify efforts and work closely together to defend Putrajaya.
"As party members, we can replace lost property, we can regain a lost position, but if we lost our power, we will lose everything," he said.
Rosli said to face the GE13, Umno members at all levels should hold on to the basic principle of Umno's struggles, that its 'Bersatu, Bersetia, Berkhidmat' (United, Loyalty and to Serve) to restore the party's strength and all interests involving individual and community.
Deputy Kelantan Umno Liaison Committee chairman Datuk Dr Awang Adek Hussin said Kelantan Umno delegates would return to their respective divisions and intensify their efforts to further improve their election machineries, including by fine-tuning the information technology system, voters' trends and polling centres.
The Bachok Umno chief also said that what was important was for all Umno members to be sincere in serving the party, to accept the candidates selected by party leadership and to strive to ensure victory for the party and Barisan Nasional (BN) in the GE13.
Kelantan Umno will also intensify its promotional campaigns on BN's success in developing the country, besides exposing the failure and false promises of the opposition, the deputy finance minister said.
Meanwhile, Batu Pahat Umno chief Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi said the president's message should be interpreted and conveyed to the members at the grassroots by focusing on activities at polling district centres (PDM).
"The party's election machinery must try to win the hearts of the voters, including non-Umno supporters, new, young and female voters, as well as the fence-sitters," said the deputy education minister.
For example, he said several activities had also been carried out by Batu Pahat Umno machinery to reach out to the voters, including by organising PDM's open day.
"By doing this, we can find out whether or not they are fence-sitters. Although we may not know their political leanings, at least we have reached them," he said.
Mohd Puad said he had made optimum use of the short messaging service (SMS) to identify 10,000 out of 84,000 voters in his parliamentary constituency and through their replies, he could also see their political tendencies.
Kota Baharu Umno chief Datuk Mohd Fathmi Che Salleh, on the other hand, said that the first thing done in his division was to ensure that all problems affecting the unity among members in the division and branch levels were addressed and solved as quickly as possible.
"Whoever fielded as candidates will get our support. That is important because we can see that the people's support for Umno and BN has increased tremendously.
"The only thing that have shaken our unity all this years was when we fight each other over petty issues," he said.
He said the go-to-the-ground programme would also be intensified to meet the voters and convey the president's message that only Umno and BN were capable of ensuring the future of the country.
Penang Umno Liaison Committee chairman Datuk Zainal Abidin Osman said Penang Umno would focus on activities that could touch the people's hearts.
Zainal Abidin, who is also Umno Supreme Council member said: "We don't have much time, Umno members must focus on spreading the prime minister's message that the opposition will only bring problems to the country."
Meanwhile, Perak Umno information chief Datuk Saarani Mohamad said the president's message which focus on the GE13, also reminded party members and election machinery not to focus on Umno supporters, but also on non-Umno supporters, especially the first-time voters.
The Lenggong Umno delegate said: "We will buckle up and work harder to persuade the new voters to support Umno."
Merbok Umno chief Datuk Tajul Urus Mat Zain said Merbok Umno was planning to call Kelantan Umno chief Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed to share his experience in facing the opposition and the importance of unity among party members, while Baling Umno chief Datuk Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim said all information received by the delegates at the assembly should be conveyed accurately with party members at the grassroots.
